I have decided to submit this artwork showing the most desired materials in 2020. 2020 was inflicted greatly by the COVID-19 virus; because of this, we were forced to lockdown and separate ourselves from others. We were told that all we could do was wash our hands, disinfect everything, social distance, and wear masks. To stay clean and safe, everyone began to mass purchase masks, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, and defiantly toilet paper.

The Capitola Community Grant program is budgeted at $125,000 from the city general fund and $60,000 from dedicated youth and early childhood program funding. The youth and early childhood program funding is a percentage of the voter approved of transient occupancy tax.

Join the Capitola Art & Cultural Commission and artist Troy Corliss on Wednesday, April 23, as we unveil the 41st Avenue Streetscape Public Art Project. The reception will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Fairfield Inn, 1255 41st Ave., followed by a tour of the crushed glass panels lining the medians from Gross Street to Brommer Street.

41st Avenue Adaptive Traffic Signal System

General work description:

In March 2012 the Capitola City Council approved the “41st Avenue Median Public Art Project.” It is being created by Troy Corliss (Artist). This is by far the most significant art project that the City has undertaken, and is scheduled for completion this winter. The project will consist of large bright and colorful translucent “ocean theme” panels made of crushed glass and silicone. The assorted panels will appear as sails, kayaks and surfboards.

A Soquel tall tale involves a man of the pioneer era who tried to hock
his footwear for a pint of whiskey at a local saloon.

He asked the proprietor if he could "soak his boots." When the saloonkeeper grumbled, "You go and soak hell," the reaction tickled the bar patrons so much they applied the name of Soquel to the saloon, the ground it stood on and the entire surrounding township.

The City of Capitola sits on the shores of the Pacific Ocean along Monterey Bay. Located just 35 miles southwest of San Jose and less than two hours’ drive from San Francisco, “Camp Capitola” began as a popular beachfront tourist destination. Today the City maintains those roots and has added a vibrant commercial district and several distinct residential neighborhoods. Nearly 10,000 people call Capitola home, and countless more visit to enjoy both its natural beauty and other attractions.

The City of Capitola Art & Cultural Commission is delighted to host the ninth annual Capitola Plein Air, juried art competition, exhibition, and sale. It is a FREE event, with hands-on art-making for all visitors, live music, and forty local and regional artists selling their works and competing for the top prize.

The City Manager’s Department is responsible for the overall administration of the City. Working closely with the City Council, this department’s priority is to assist them with policy legislation and direct policy implementation. In pursuing these endeavors emphasis is placed on excellence in customer services, thorough community out reach, recruiting and retaining skilled and knowledgeable employees, creating and maintaining a working environment that fosters creativity and innovation, and prioritizing scarce resources.

This piece is 43 inches in height and took almost a year to complete. It consists of 5 pieces of Butternut glued together to make a  48 inch square plank. A CNC router was used to cut the hole for the mirror. The outer edge was done with a jig saw. After lots of gluing, lots of tool sharpening, much banging with chisels and a mallet and plenty of patience I found this in the wood! The Acanthus Leaf style is a traditional European pattern, but I added the shell, which is not traditionally used with this type of pattern, because of where I live in Santa Cruz.

2020 felt very dark, especially during the days when the air filled with smoke and ashes washed up on the beach, but somehow my mind rested with the memory of the bioluminescent waves I’d seen under the moon a couple of weeks earlier. The monochrome oil painting was made using Phthalo blue. This year was hard for many and I wish healing for the Earth and all of us depending on it.

The toilet paper and hand sanitizer represent the panic and fear in the initial days of the COVID-19 outbreak.  The calla lilies in the vase, which  are often used at funerals, are also representative of springtime and life.  The bloom time also correlates to when the piece was created in March 2020, as the state shutdown first occurred.  The dead calla lilies in the foreground are representative of those who had passed as a result of the pandemic.  The Scottish Cross represents faith and hope.

Lighthouses are literally beacons to guide us toward safety. It has been enormously encouraging to share our gorgeous views along the ocean with fellow masked strangers. I have completed many ocean and coastal scenes over these last nine months and feel fortunate to have had this subject matter at my feet.  I chose to paint the scene of the Santa Cruz Lighthouse in dramatic colors that could represent sunset after a stressful day or sunrise with the promise of a new day, beginnings and hope.

The City of Capitola is recruiting for a Building Official.  The Building official will be employed by the City of Capitola, but it is anticipated that the position will work under contract at an another jurisdiction for up to 50% of the workweek.

Each sheet of the plans and calculations must be signed by the design professional. Digital signatures are acceptable.  Partial or incomplete submittals will result in rejection. The California Coast Classic (CCC) Bike Tour is a fully-supported boutique cycling tour limited to 250 riders to raise funds a annually for the Arthritis Foundation. The idea for 1000 Squirrels came to me in a flash, like a squirrel darting up a tree or leaping from one branch to another. Midway through giving an acupuncture treatment to an artist friend, I uncharacteristically blurted out “I’m going to make 1000 squirrels!” 
 
I’ve spent the last two decades meticulously twisting wire into intricate, anatomically-inspired sculptures—the perfect marriage of my studies in anatomy and my interest in Tai Chi and movement.
 
The Covid-19 pandemic hit me hard, like the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. I was teaching Tai Chi, and I felt the power of the earth rumbling up from below. Now I feel a huge shift coming from inside of me. Life feels tenuous and precious. At 65, I’m considered elderly, a person with pre-existing conditions, someone to be protected. I want to do something meaningful with the time I have left on this earth. 
 
There’s a principle in Tai Chi that revolves around practicing a long 108 move long form. The form is like a kinesthetic alphabet, and is taught one move at a time. It takes almost a year to learn the entire form, then it’s practiced over and over thousands of times, until you reach a certain depth. However, there is never an end to the learning process. 
 
1000 Squirrels is based on that principle. I want to explore my artistic abilities in a multitude of mediums using one subject: the common, adorable, mischievous squirrel. I drew the first 50 squirrels with graphite pencils. The pieces are playful, humorous, and some are dark, like the current times. This project is helping me stretch my abilities and open my vision. I’m looking forward to using other mediums, both 2D and 3D, as I progress through my form, one squirrel at a time.

Call to Artists: The Capitola Art & Cultural Commission is requesting qualifications from muralists who will be selected to design and produce a playable sculpture at Esplanade Park. The artist selection will be a two-step process: first, the Commission will screen the qualifications and select up to artists to develop a design proposal; second, one artist’s design will be selected by the Art and Cultural Commission andsubmitted for final approval by the Capitola City Council.

The Capitola Branch Library has closed to begin the process of constructing a new building.  While the new building is under construction, a book return box will be available at the Jade Street Community Center and nearby library branches will have extended hours.

August 28, 2020: To further stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community, Capitola Beach will be closed begining 5am on Saturday, September 5 through 5pm on Monday, September 7. During this closure, traversing the beach to access the ocean is permitted and the water will remain open at all times for activity and water sports. 

On Saturday and Sunday, September 6 and 7, the beach will be opened from 6pm to 8pm only. 

Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26 in Capitola Village

The Capitola Beach Festival is a family-friendly festival including the following events: sand sculpture contest, fishing derby, rowboat races, horseshoe tournament, children's art, chalk art, and the lighted boat nautical parade.

The City of Capitola is currently recruiting for the position of Beach Lifeguard Captain.  The Beach Lifeguard Captain Position is a Part-Time/Seasonal position, not to exceed 960 hours in a calendar year. Candidates for the Beach Lifeguard Captain must be available for full-time employment (40 hours per week) for the summer months (May through August).

The attached list are contractors who have been pre-qualified and can submit construction bids for the Capitola Branch Library Project.  Its is currently anticipated that the bid documents, including plans and specifications will be distributed on or around the first of May 2018.

The Friends of the Capitola Branch Library will hold its December big book sale on Saturday, December 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  In time for holiday shopping, it features hundreds of donated books of all genres (fiction, non-fiction, children’s, and more) plus lots of CDs. Books are just $2 for hardbacks and paperbacks for $1. Find the Friends book sale on the porch of the Capitola Branch Library, 2005 Wharf Road in Capitola.

Attendees can also see the current architectural designs and pictures for the new library to be built on the current site.

The Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Capitola City Council Candidates Forum in the City of Capitola Council Chambers on Wednesday, October 5th from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.

The term of office shall be to fill a vacancy with a term expiring in June 2019. The City Council is seeking applications from persons who are preferably Capitola residents, 18 years of age or older, with a general interest in local history and in becoming involved in local government. Duties of the board are specified in the attached Municipal Code Chapter 2.28.

The City of Capitola and Santa Cruz Public Libraries are pleased to announce the Grand Opening Celebration of the Capitola Branch Library!

Currently, the City of Capitola does not have an active application for redevelopment of the Capitola Mall.  In the fall of 2019, the Planning Commission and City Council reviewed a conceptual review appliation and provided guidance to the applicant.  The City anticipates an official planning application in 2021.  This website will be updated when a complete application for mall redevelopment is submitted.  Below is an overview of the conceptual review process.

CAPITOLA PLEIN AIR RETURNS FOR THE FOURTH ANNUAL ART FESTIVAL NOVEMBER 1-4, 2018!

CAPITOLA PLEIN AIR RETURNS FOR THE FOURTH ANNUAL ART FESTIVAL NOVEMBER 1-4, 2018!

The City of Capitola Art & Cultural Commission is delighted to host the fifth annual Capitola Plein Air, juried art competition, exhibition, and sale. It is a FREE event, with hands-on art-making for all visitors, live music, and forty local and regional artists selling their works and competing for the top prize.

More than 100 framed paintings will be on display for the competition, exhibition, and sale. The public is invited to vote for the People’s Choice Award and enjoy the exhibition, live music, and hands-on art making. Local food truck will be on hand for hungry visitors.

The winners of the inaugural Capitola Plein Air event will be on display at Gayle's Bakery & Rosticceria through February.  Come by to see the paintings and supports the Arts in Capitola.

During New Year's Eve the Capitola Police Department Volunteers will be providing a free shuttle service to any person who feels impaired by alcohol.

The CWEP group is made up of community members who are raising private donations to enhance the City project. Wharf Resiliency and Public Access Improvement Project – Phase I

Phase 1 of the Wharf Resiliency and Public Access Improvement Project was completed in 2021. The project repaired the steel piles at the head of the wharf, by encasing them in a new host pipe and backfilling the entire pile with slurry; and repaired the wharf structure underneath the wharf buildings.
