Predator and Prey

Predator and Prey

Artist: Noah Bressman
Media: Mixed Media (Photography, Biological Art, Digital Art)

Dr. Noah Bressman is a fish biologist working in Moss Landing whose research focuses on fish biology, behavior, and functional morphology. Functional morphology is the study of how organisms use their shape and anatomy. One technique for studying functional morphology is 'clearing and staining'. This technique uses a series of chemicals to stain different tissues specific colors (i.e, bone is stained purplish-red and cartilage is stained blue), while dissolving other tissues away or making them look transparent. This makes it very easy to study skeletons, but photographs of these stained organisms happen to be beautiful by-products. Some of my art consist solely of the photograph, but sometimes I take it to the next level and digitally alter them to create more funky, elaborate pieces that shows the beauty within nature while giving a quick biology lesson.
