Be an ambassador for Capitola!

Summary:

The Capitola Historical Museum preserves and promotes the history of Capitola through creating exhibitions, maintaining a collection of historic photographs and artifacts, conducting oral histories, and participating in special events. We are always looking for museum volunteer Museum Docents to help keep the doors open!

The purpose of this volunteer position is to support the operation of the museum and promote museum activities. Our volunteers are the face of the museum and ambassadors to the community. Museum volunteers can contribute in several ways.

Museum Desk Duties:

Serve at least one two-hour shift, once a month to man the Volunteer Desk in the museum. The museum is open mid-March through the end of December. There are two shifts Friday through Sunday: Noon to 2:00 PM -or- 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Open or close the museum according to shift by following training and Volunteer Manual instructions. Greet and welcome visitors. Introduce visitors to the current exhibition and answer visitor questions about the exhibition, Capitola history, parking, etc. Answer telephone inquiries. Record daily visitor counts. Receive and record donation funds for sales items. Perform light housekeeping in and outside of the museum. Operate the T.V. and video player. Inform visitors of other museum activities, exhibitions, and special events. Assist with office work and other special projects, as needed. Maintain and enforce necessary security procedures to ensure the safety of museum guests, the museum's exhibitions, and its collections. For special events, there may be evening and/or weekend hours. Monitor the museum and report any problems or needed supplies. Take messages for the Curator and, only if necessary, accept artifact/photograph donations by securing item(s) with a note to the Curator in the cabinet and filling out a Temporary Receipt for Property for the potential donor.

Other Volunteer Opportunities:

In addition to staffing the museum desk, volunteers may also help with outreach to events throughout the year such as the Spring Exhibition Opening Reception, the Art & Wine Festival, and the Beach Festival. There may also be occasional projects involving scanning historic photographs, assisting with cataloging, working on exhibitions, or assisting with tours and school programs. Volunteers are encouraged to let the Curator know of their special skills such as photography, art, carpentry, music, research, etc.

Desired Qualifications:

Enjoy working with the public. Enjoy visiting museums and historic sites. Prompt, reliable and courteous. Knowledgeable or an interest in learning about local history. Ability to keep simple statistics and records. Ability to work independently. Accept guidance of the volunteer coordinators. If under 18 years of age - must be accompanied by an adult during the volunteer activity
