Born in 1881, Edith Pawla had been married twice and had several occupations before moving to Capitola in 1917 and starting her famous violet gardens. With her daughter, Emily, she collected over 100 varieties and sold up to 27 kinds through mail-order. She also sold real estate, bred Old English sheepdogs, and was active with the Congregational Church and the Save The Redwoods League. The property with its many trees and terraced gardens was sold in the 1960s is now the site of a housing development on Wharf Road near the freeway.
