Metaphor

Metaphor

Artist: Susan Megorden
Media: Mosaic

As 2020 began, the world seemed a luminous place for my recently retired self. I was hard at work pursuing my new favorite passion, mosaic making. But as the boundless possibilities of the outside world began to narrow, I wasn't just worried for my family and friends safety, but I became worried literally for our way fo life. What would happen? Could we return to what we once had? Thus began the process of surrounding myself with a pod of  people that made me feel safe, responsible, and in control.

Just as a caterpillar swaddles itself in its chrysalis, I turned more inward and my old,  carefree self underwent a remarkable transformation. As my circle of companions began to shrink, I to  pursued my art with a renewed passion and nature informed my work while providing solace and balance. Long walks seemed to reassure and calm me, while more importantly inspiring me. As John Muir noticed, "In every walk with nature, one receives more than he seeks." With the coming New Year, I have decided to emerge from my chrysalis and focus on the beautiful parts of me that are like a glorious butterfly. I am hopeful that my art will inspire others to rejoice in the hope that lies ahead for all of us in 2021.
