A wise teacher told me to paint what I love and learn to love what I paint; I apply that maxim to my work.  A warm shadow under an awning, the tenderness of an embrace, the light bouncing off a sidewalk on a hot day, the irregularity of the cobblestone street in Mexico, etc. can be enough to ignite my heart.  It is a privilege to gain new understanding of my artistic process when I embark on a watercolor journey, be it a watercolor sketch or a studio piece.  Playing with shape, color, value, and composition can transform a weak subject into an extraordinary piece.   2020 was the year of plein air for me (and my watercolor students!); we painted throughout Santa Cruz County every Wednesday.  Painting with those wonderful people at lovely sites was a very rich take away from this crazy year.
