Did you know that every intersection is a crosswalk?

When two streets intersect, there is either a marked crosswalk or there is an “unmarked” crosswalk. As part of the recently passed Assembly Bill (AB) 413, it is now illegal to park 20 feet in advance of either type of crosswalk, even if the curb is not painted red. AB 413 is also known as the “Daylighting” law.

What is Daylighting?

Daylighting is a safety concept aimed at improving visibility near crosswalks by removing parked cars and other obstructions. The goal is to keep the area adjacent to crosswalks clear, allowing drivers to see pedestrians who are using or about to enter the crosswalk. This traffic safety measure is part of the City's ongoing commitment to enhance the safety of both residents and visitors in Capitola.

Assembly Bill (AB) 413 started on January 1, 2024, and the law will come into full effect on January 1, 2025.

Activities:

The City of Capitola will be modifying parking in the Village to comply with AB 413 and will designate some daylighting areas for public bike parking. According to AB 413, it is illegal to park within 20 feet of a crosswalk, regardless of whether the curb is painted red. Locations to be painted red will include mid-block crossings and areas in commercial zones, parks, and schools.
