Call to Artists: The Capitola Art & Cultural Commission is requesting qualifications from muralists who will be selected to design and produce a playable sculpture at Esplanade Park. The artist selection will be a two-step process: first, the Commission will screen the qualifications and select up to artists to develop a design proposal; second, one artist’s design will be selected by the Art and Cultural Commission andsubmitted for final approval by the Capitola City Council.

Capitola Village is located along a wide beach with a breathtaking view of Monterey Bay and is home to numerous craft galleries, boutiques and restaurants. It is here wheremany events take place such as the Begonia Festival, Annual Capitola Art & Wine Festival, Twilight Concerts, Art shows and many other family fun events. The playablesculpture will be located at the street end of the Esplanade Park near the entrance to the Capitola Beach. The Monterey Bay Marine themed sculpture will be located on a pad area approximately 18 x 20 feet. We do not anticipate the maximum height sculpture to be greater 5 feet at the highest point. The sculpture will be mounted into the ground, and surrounded by a ASTM F1292 tested, unitary shock absorbing surface,as per U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission playground requirements. The installation of the sculpture will be done in conjunction with city of Capitola Public Works. The sculpture will be install in a marine environment so materials used shouldbe very weather resistant and should be safe for children climb on.
