Cliff Dr. Resiliency Project

Overhead view of Cliff Drive

Location:

Cliff Drive

Description:

January 2023 saw major storm events that caused significant erosion to the bluff along Cliff Drive southwest of Hooper Beach. These storms undermined the retaining wall installed in the mid-1990s. Last fall, the City initiated a study to assess risks to the bluff due to sea level rise and storm surge, which may threaten Cliff Drive's accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists in the future.

Updates

  • Be on the lookout for a community survey in late July! We want your input on alternatives and needs. See the information provided so far below.

  • At the June 27, 2024 City Council Meeting, staff provided an update on the Cliff Drive Resiliency Project, detailing goals of improving mobility, protecting against erosion, and preserving environmental resources. They discussed three strategies: doing nothing, adapting to sea level rise, and protecting the bluff. Staff outlined the next steps, including finalizing evaluations, continuing public outreach, and seeking additional funding. The council provided valuable feedback to move forward.

A recording of the meeting is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGb83eKn71g Slides are provided below.

  • The City of Capitola Public Works Department hosted a public meeting at the Community Center on 4400 Jade Street in Capitola on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, from 6 to 8 pm. Approximately 20 residents attended. A presentation was given on the project's history, planning considerations, and an overview of potential adaptation alternatives. Breakout group discussions followed, allowing residents to ask questions directly to project consultants and City staff, and provide feedback through surveys and written notes.
