Project Celebration / Special City Council Meeting

Tuesday, April 22, 2025 - 10:00am

The City of Capitola is proud to announce the official start of construction for the long-anticipated renovation of the Capitola Community Center, a shared community space that has served residents and locals for more than four decades. A celebration of the launch of this project is set for Tuesday, April 22, at 10 A.M. Located in the heart of Jade Street Park, the Community Center has long been a hub for multi-generational recreation classes, seasonal camps, outdoor activities, and gatherings. The renovation project will breathe new life into the facility, ensuring it continues to meet the evolving needs of Capitola’s vibrant and diverse community.

The project’s primary focus is to address aging infrastructure, improve accessibility, and enhance energy efficiency. The project will also optimize the building layout to allow for flexible meeting spaces, upgrade customer service areas, and enhance restroom facilities.  The renovation will incorporate architectural elements inspired by Capitola Wharf and our coastline, with textured concrete, fiber cement board, and wooden accents. This independent project will compliment the City’s near-future Treasure Cove at Jade Street Park universally accessible playground project. Treasure Cove Playground will likely go to bid in Fall 2025 for construction beginning in Spring 2026.

The Jade Street Community Center Renovation Project is made possible through strong community support, including one-million-dollar grant funding from State Assembly Bill 102, championed by Assembly Member Dawn Addis. Construction began in early April and is expected to be completed within one year. On Tuesday, April 22, at 10 A.M. Capitola Mayor Joe Clarke, City Staff, and partners will gather at the Community Center site to celebrate the start of construction on this exciting project. Public Works Director Jessica Kahn will lead a brief tour of the project’s key features. As this small event will take place at an active construction site, personal protective equipment must be worn by attending members of the press.
